Katherine K. Hanley, Secretary of the CommonwealthRecently retired as Chairman (at-large) of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Ms. Hanley was first elected Chairman during a special election held in February, 1995; elected to a full 4-year term in November 1995; and reelected in 1999. Prior to her election as Chairman, she represented Providence District on the Board of Supervisors. She was first elected Providence District Supervisor in 1986, and re-elected in 1987 and 1991. Before serving on the Board of Supervisors, she served one term on the Fairfax County School Board. While on the Board of Supervisors, she served as:

Prior to her appointment as Secretary, she served as the President and CEO of the Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE). Her community service included:
She continues to serve on the INOVA Health Care Services Board of Trustees; the Fairfax Partnership for Youth Board of Directors; and the Sorenson Institute Northern Virginia Advisory Board. Ms. Hanley was previously employed as a counselor at the University of Missouri and as a teacher and guidance counselor for the City of Falls Church public schools. She was a small business owner/operator of a hardware store. Ms. Hanley received a B.A. degree in French Civilization and a B.S. degree in Secondary Education from the University of Missouri where she was Phi Beta Kappa. She received her M.A.T. from Harvard University in Social Science. She is married to Edward J. Hanley and they have two adult children.
